A vulnerability was found in pidgin up to 2.5.2 (Messaging Software). It has been declared as critical. The pidgin_conv_chat_rename_user function in gtkconv.c in Pidgin before 2.10.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) by changing a nickname while in an XMPP chat room.
The weakness was presented 03/15/2012 by Thijs Alkemade (Website). The advisory is shared at pidgin.im. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-4939 since 12/23/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 2.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
