The msn_oim_report_to_user function in oim.c in the MSN protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin before 2.10.2 allows remote servers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via an OIM message that lacks UTF-8 encoding.

The weakness was shared 03/15/2012 by Thijs Alkemade (Website). The advisory is available at pidgin.im. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1178 since 02/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
