A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Wireshark up to 1.6.4 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function reassemble_message of the component RLC Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the reassemble_message function in epan/dissectors/packet-rlc.c in the RLC dissector in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.11 and 1.6.x before 1.6.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a series of fragmented RLC packets.
The weakness was released 04/11/2012 as Bug 6391 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0043 since 12/07/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to approached within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57624 (Fedora 16 : wireshark-1.6.5-1.fc16 (2012-0435)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120898 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 4 Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.6.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
