Details
A vulnerability was found in Google SketchUp 6.0/7.0/7.1. It has been classified as very critical. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Google SketchUp before 8 does not properly handle edge geometry in SketchUp (aka .SKP) files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file.
The weakness was presented 04/17/2012 with Microsoft as MSVR/MSV as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-2478 since 06/14/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/12/2025). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56713 (Google SketchUp < 8.0 SKP File Malformed Edge Geometry Handling Remote Code Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119348 (Google SketchUp ".SKP" File Invalid Edge Geometry Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MSVR/MSV is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
