Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird 14 SVG File Value Addition Filter numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 14 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is the function nsSVGFEMorphologyElement::Filter of the component SVG File Value Addition Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the nsSVGFEMorphologyElement::Filter function in Mozilla Firefox before 15.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.7, Thunderbird before 15.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.7, and SeaMonkey before 2.12 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SVG filter that triggers an incorrect sum calculation, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was disclosed 08/28/2012 by Arthur Gerkis as MFSA 2012-63 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3969 since 07/11/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known. Security researcher Arthur Gerkis used the Address Sanitizer tool to find two issues involving Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) files. The first issue is a buffer overflow in Gecko's SVG filter code when the sum of two values is too large to be stored as a signed 32-bit integer, causing the function to write past the end of an array.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 892553 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121143 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 2.5 Missing).

Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (892553), SecurityFocus (BID 55292†), OSVDB (85004†), Secunia (SA50088†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-36000†). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The entries VDB-6036, VDB-6035, VDB-6039 and VDB-6040 are pretty similar.
