CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 14. It has been declared as problematic. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component HTTPMonitor Extension. Such manipulation leads to access control. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2012-3973. In addition, an exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox 14 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component HTTPMonitor Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The debugger in the developer-tools subsystem in Mozilla Firefox before 15.0, when remote debugging is disabled, does not properly restrict access to the remote-debugging service, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging the presence of the HTTPMonitor extension and connecting to that service through the HTTPMonitor port.

The weakness was presented 08/28/2012 by Mark Goodwin as MFSA 2012-66 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3973 since 07/11/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61741 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (2b8cad90-f289-11e1-a215-14dae9ebcf89)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165433 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2012:1167-1)). If remote debugging is disabled, but the experimental HTTPMonitor extension has been installed and enabled, a remote user can connect to and use the remote debugging service through the port used by HTTPMonitor.

Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting remote-enabled. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (61741), SecurityFocus (BID 55308†), OSVDB (85005†), Secunia (SA50088†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027450†). bugzilla.mozilla.org is providing further details. See VDB-6036, VDB-6035, VDB-6039 and VDB-6040 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
