Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apache Struts (Programming Tool Software). This affects an unknown function of the component Request Parameter Handler. The manipulation as part of a OGNL Expression leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The token check mechanism in Apache Struts 2.0.0 through 2.3.4 does not properly validate the token name configuration parameter, which allows remote attackers to perform cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks by setting the token name configuration parameter to a session attribute.
The weakness was shared 08/03/2012 by Johno Crawford as S2-011 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at struts.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4386 since 08/21/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 2.3.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at struts.apache.org. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting paramNameMaxLength. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. As of Struts 2.3.4.1, parameter name length is limited to a maximum of 100 characters.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78183), SecurityFocus (BID 55346†), OSVDB (85009†) and Secunia (SA50420†). The entries VDB-6070 and VDB-62035 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
