TYPO3 up to 4.4.4 TypoScript path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in TYPO3 (Content Management System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function TypoScript. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in mod/tools/em/class.em_unzip.php in the unzip library in TYPO3 4.2.x before 4.2.16, 4.3.x before 4.3.9, and 4.4.x before 4.4.5 allows remote attackers to write arbitrary files via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2010 by Helmut Hummel (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-5102 since 04/30/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 4.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64180), SecurityFocus (BID 45470†), OSVDB (70119†) and Secunia (SA35770†). The entries VDB-60871, VDB-60789, VDB-60788 and VDB-60786 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
