Details
A vulnerability was found in Opera Web Browser 11.66/12.01 on Mac (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Small Window Dialog Box Button Display Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Opera before 11.67 and 12.x before 12.02 allows remote attackers to cause truncation of a dialog, and possibly trigger downloading and execution of arbitrary programs, via a crafted web site.
The weakness was shared 08/30/2012 with Opera Software as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared at opera.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-6460 since 01/02/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. When an important dialog is being displayed, such as a download dialog, the entire dialog should be visible, so that the user can clearly see what the dialog's buttons will do. In some cases, specific user interactions can cause Opera not to enforce this correctly, allowing the window to become smaller than the dialog. The edge of the window remains visible, but users may assume misleading buttons on an underlying page are part of the dialog buttons, and click on the part of the dialog's buttons that are still visible.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61732 (Opera < 12.02 Truncated Dialog Vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
Upgrading to version 11.67 or 12.02 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78137), Tenable (61732), SecurityFocus (BID 55301†), OSVDB (85110†) and Secunia (SA50381†). opera.com is providing further details. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
