The JPEGWarningHandler function in coders/jpeg.c in ImageMagick before 6.7.6-3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a JPEG image with a crafted sequence of restart markers.

The weakness was disclosed 06/05/2012 by Aleksis Kauppinen (Codenomicon) with Codenomicon CROSS Project (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0260 since 12/21/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72876 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 12.10 / 13.10 : imagemagick vulnerabilities (USN-2132-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 5.5.7.31 eliminates this vulnerability.
