ImageMagick up to 6.5.x TIFFGetEXIFProperties memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.5.x (Image Processing Software). This affects the function TIFFGetEXIFProperties. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The TIFFGetEXIFProperties function in coders/tiff.c in ImageMagick before 6.7.6-3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and crash) via a crafted EXIF IFD in a TIFF image.

The weakness was presented 06/05/2012 by Aleksis Kauppinen (Codenomicon) with Codenomicon CROSS Project (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at imagemagick.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1798 since 03/21/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69683 (Amazon Linux AMI : ImageMagick (ALAS-2012-76)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350671 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for ImageMagick: ALAS-2012-076).

Upgrading to version 6.5.3-5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74659), Tenable (69683), SecurityFocus (BID 52898†), OSVDB (81023†) and Secunia (SA48974†).
