Konstanty Bialkowski libmodplug up to 0.8.8.2 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Konstanty Bialkowski libmodplug up to 0.8.8.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the (1) abc_new_macro and (2) abc_new_umacro functions in src/load_abc.cpp in libmodplug before 0.8.8.3 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ABC file. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was disclosed 06/07/2012 with epiphant (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-1761 since 04/19/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by epiphant in ANSI C and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 406 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75585 (openSUSE Security Update : libmodplug (openSUSE-SU-2011:0551-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 0.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (17222), Tenable (75585), SecurityFocus (BID 47624†), OSVDB (72157†) and Secunia (SA44388†). The entries VDB-60911, VDB-60910, VDB-60909 and VDB-60908 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
