Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel and classified as problematic. The affected element is an unknown function. Executing a manipulation can lead to race condition. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1768. There is not any exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The tunnels implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.34, when tunnel functionality is configured as a module, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (OOPS) by sending a packet during module loading.
The issue has been introduced in 02/24/2010. The weakness was released 06/13/2012 by Alexey Dobriyan (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1768. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 840 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55170 (Debian DSA-2264-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195209 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-1268-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (55170), SecurityFocus (BID 47853†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31458†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-60945. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
