Linux Kernel up to 2.6.38.8 ip_expire denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The ip_expire function in net/ipv4/ip_fragment.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39 does not properly construct ICMP_TIME_EXCEEDED packets after a timeout, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid pointer dereference) via crafted fragmented packets.

The issue has been introduced in 03/14/2011. The weakness was disclosed 06/13/2012 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1927 since 05/09/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 457 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55591 (Ubuntu 11.04 : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1167-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67498), Tenable (55591), SecurityFocus (BID 47872†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41776†). The entries VDB-4416, VDB-4544, VDB-61074 and VDB-61073 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
