Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.39. It has been declared as problematic. This affects the function ldm_frag_add. The manipulation results in memory corruption.
This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-2182. There is no available exploit.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.39 (Operating System). Affected is the function ldm_frag_add. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The ldm_frag_add function in fs/partitions/ldm.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39.1 does not properly handle memory allocation for non-initial fragments, which might allow local users to conduct buffer overflow attacks, and gain privileges or obtain sensitive information, via a crafted LDM partition table. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2011-1017.
The issue has been introduced in 05/18/2011. The weakness was presented 06/13/2012 by Ben Hutchings (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-2182 since 05/31/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 12/03/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 295 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58288 (USN-1392-1 : linux-fsl-imx51 vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165570 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:034)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (58288), SecurityFocus (BID 52334†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-34584†). See VDB-57961, VDB-57395 and VDB-63673 for similar entries.
