Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.39/2.6.39.1/2.6.39.2 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function scan_get_next_rmap_item. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the scan_get_next_rmap_item function in mm/ksm.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39.3, when Kernel SamePage Merging (KSM) is enabled, allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted application.
The issue has been introduced in 05/18/2011. The weakness was shared 06/13/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2183 since 05/31/2011. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 245 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57583 (Debian DSA-2389-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195231 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-ti-omap4 Vulnerabilities (USN-1244-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (67817), Exploit-DB (35820), Tenable (57583), SecurityFocus (BID 49140†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-34090†). The entries VDB-61074, VDB-60830, VDB-60827 and VDB-63674 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
