Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32.51 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in net/wireless/nl80211.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39.2 allow local users to gain privileges by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability during scan operations with a long SSID value.
The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was disclosed 05/24/2012 by Petr Matousek (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2517 since 06/15/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/02/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 903 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56271 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:1212)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195231 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-ti-omap4 Vulnerabilities (USN-1244-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (56271), SecurityFocus (BID 48538†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-32097†). The entries VDB-4668, VDB-60956, VDB-60949 and VDB-63673 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
