The x86_assign_hw_event function in arch/x86/kernel/cpu/perf_event.c in the Performance Events subsystem in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39 does not properly calculate counter values, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) via the perf program.
The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was presented 05/24/2012 by Arun Sharma (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-2521 since 06/15/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
