The ext4_fill_super function in fs/ext4/super.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39 does not properly initialize a certain error-report data structure, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS) by attempting to mount a crafted ext4 filesystem.

The issue has been introduced in 03/14/2011. The weakness was shared 06/13/2012 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-2493 since 06/15/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
