The weakness was disclosed 08/31/2012 by Writ Keeper (Fomafix) with MediaWiki as Bug 39700 as not defined mailinglist post (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4377 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61765 (FreeBSD : mediawiki -- multiple vulnerabilities (7c0fecd6-f42f-11e1-b17b-000c2977ec30)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
