A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Tor 0.2.2.37 (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this issue is the function networkstatus_parse_vote_from_string of the file routerparse.c of the component Document Handler. The networkstatus_parse_vote_from_string function in routerparse.c in Tor before 0.2.2.38 does not properly handle an invalid flavor name, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and daemon crash) via a crafted (1) vote document or (2) consensus document.

The weakness was shared 08/03/2012 by arma as Bug 6530 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gitweb.torproject.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3518 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy.
