qemu up to 0.11.0 improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in qemu up to 0.11.0 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

qemu-kvm before 0.11.0 disables VNC authentication when the password is cleared, which allows remote attackers to bypass authentication and establish VNC sessions.

The weakness was presented 01/04/2011 by Petr Matousek (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.launchpad.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0011. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68227 (Oracle Linux 6 : qemu-kvm (ELSA-2011-0345)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155468 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for qemu-kvm (ELSA-2011-0345)).

Upgrading to version 0.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be adding authentication.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68227), SecurityFocus (BID 45743†), OSVDB (70992†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29861†).
