A vulnerability has been found in Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. A certain Java applet in the VPN downloader implementation in the WebLaunch feature in Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 3.x before 3.0 MR7 on 64-bit Linux platforms does not properly restrict use of Java components, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site, aka Bug ID CSCty45925.
The weakness was disclosed 06/20/2012 by Cisco with Zero Day Initiative as cisco-sa-20120620-ac as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-2496 since 05/07/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62045 (MS 2736233: Update Rollup for ActiveX Kill Bits (2736233)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120296 (Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
