A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Citrix Xen 4.0.0/4.1.0/4.2.0 (Connectivity Software). This affects an unknown function of the component Transcendent Memory (TMEM). (1) TMEMC_SAVE_GET_CLIENT_WEIGHT, (2) TMEMC_SAVE_GET_CLIENT_CAP, (3) TMEMC_SAVE_GET_CLIENT_FLAGS and (4) TMEMC_SAVE_END in the Transcendent Memory (TMEM) in Xen 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 allow local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference or memory corruption and host crash) or possibly have other unspecified impacts via a NULL client id.
The weakness was released 09/05/2012 by Matthew Daley as 2012-09/msg00006 as confirmed posting (Maillist). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.xen.org. The public release was coordinated with Citrix. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3497 since 06/14/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83564 (SUSE SLED10 / SLES10 Security Update : Xen (SUSE-SU-2012:1487-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165715 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for libvirt (SUSE-SU-2012:1503-1)).
The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
