Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GIMP up to 2.6.13 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function readstr_upto. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the readstr_upto function in plug-ins/script-fu/tinyscheme/scheme.c in GIMP 2.6.12 and earlier, and possibly 2.6.13, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string in a command to the script-fu server.
The bug was discovered 05/31/2012. The weakness was shared 07/12/2012 by Joseph Sheridan as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2763 since 05/18/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74745 (openSUSE Security Update : gimp (openSUSE-SU-2012:1131-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120907 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4/11.4b Missing).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12697.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75979), Exploit-DB (18956), Tenable (74745), SecurityFocus (BID 53741†) and OSVDB (82429†).
