A vulnerability has been found in Curtis Galloway libexif up to 0.6.20 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function exif_entry_get_value of the file exif-entry.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The exif_entry_get_value function in exif-entry.c in the EXIF Tag Parsing Library (aka libexif) before 0.6.21 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) or possibly obtain sensitive information from process memory via crafted EXIF tags in an image.
The weakness was released 07/13/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-2812 since 05/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72032 (GLSA-201401-10 : libexif, exif: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350621 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libexif: ALAS-2012-126).
Upgrading to version 0.6.19 eliminates this vulnerability.
