The exif_convert_utf16_to_utf8 function in exif-entry.c in the EXIF Tag Parsing Library (aka libexif) before 0.6.21 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) or possibly obtain sensitive information from process memory via crafted EXIF tags in an image.

The weakness was disclosed 07/13/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). The advisory is shared at ubuntu.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2813 since 05/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62047 (CentOS 5 / 6 : libexif (CESA-2012:1255)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 0.6.19 eliminates this vulnerability.
