A vulnerability was found in Curtis Galloway libexif up to 0.6.20 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function exif_convert_utf16_to_utf8 of the file exif-entry.c. The exif_convert_utf16_to_utf8 function in exif-entry.c in the EXIF Tag Parsing Library (aka libexif) before 0.6.21 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) or possibly obtain sensitive information from process memory via crafted EXIF tags in an image.
The weakness was disclosed 07/13/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk (Website). The advisory is shared at ubuntu.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2813 since 05/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62047 (CentOS 5 / 6 : libexif (CESA-2012:1255)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350621 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libexif: ALAS-2012-126).
Upgrading to version 0.6.19 eliminates this vulnerability.
