A vulnerability was found in moodle (Learning Management Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function rc4encrypt in the library lib/moodlelib.php of the component Crypto. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-255. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The rc4encrypt function in lib/moodlelib.php in Moodle 1.9.x before 1.9.16, 2.0.x before 2.0.7, 2.1.x before 2.1.4, and 2.2.x before 2.2.1 uses a hardcoded password of nfgjeingjk, which makes it easier for remote attackers to defeat cryptographic protection mechanisms by reading this script s source code within the open-source software distribution.
The weakness was published 07/17/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0794 since 01/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1552 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
By approaching the search of inurl:lib/moodlelib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58172 (Debian DSA-2421-1 : moodle - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (58172), SecurityFocus (BID 51840†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35612†).
