A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Moodle (Learning Management Software). This affects an unknown code of the file class.phpmailer.php. class.phpmailer.php in the PHPMailer library, as used in Moodle 1.9.x before 1.9.16, 2.0.x before 2.0.7, 2.1.x before 2.1.4, and 2.2.x before 2.2.1 and other products, allows remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary e-mail headers via vectors involving a crafted (1) From: or (2) Sender: header.
The weakness was disclosed 07/17/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0796 since 01/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58172 (Debian DSA-2421-1 : moodle - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
