Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component PPP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The PPP dissector in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.14, 1.6.x before 1.6.9, and 1.8.x before 1.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted packet, as demonstrated by a usbmon dump.
The weakness was published 07/24/2012 with Wireshark (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4048 since 07/24/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74695 (openSUSE Security Update : wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2012:0930-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120907 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4/11.4b Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.8.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
