A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Red Hat IcedTea-Web 1.0/1.1/1.2. Affected by this issue is the function getFirstInTableInstance. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The getFirstInTableInstance function in the IcedTea-Web plugin before 1.2.1 returns an uninitialized pointer when the instance_to_id_map hash is empty, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted web page, which causes an uninitialized memory location to be read.
The weakness was presented 08/07/2012 as Bug 840592 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3422 since 06/14/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74712 (openSUSE Security Update : icedtea-web (openSUSE-SU-2012:0982-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166469 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Package icedtea-web was updated to version 1.4. (openSUSE-SU-2013:0893-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
