Details
A vulnerability has been found in MySQL (Database Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The executable comment feature in MySQL 5.0.x before 5.0.93 and 5.1.x before 5.1.50, when running in certain slave configurations in which the slave is running a newer version than the master, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via custom comments.
The weakness was disclosed 08/16/2012 as Bug 640177 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-5026. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74626 (openSUSE Security Update : mysql-cluster (openSUSE-SU-2012:0617-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165533 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for MySQL (SUSE-SU-2012:0984-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.0.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77848), Exploit-DB (34796), Tenable (74626), SecurityFocus (BID 43676†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27425†). The entries VDB-5503, VDB-56085, VDB-56084 and VDB-56083 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
