Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Calligra 2.4/2.4.1/2.4.2/2.4.3. This affects the function read. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the read function in filters/words/msword-odf/wv2/src/styles.cpp in the Microsoft import filter in Calligra 2.4.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ODF style in an ODF document. NOTE: this is the same vulnerability as CVE-2012-3455, but it was SPLIT by the CNA even though Calligra and KOffice share the same codebase.
The weakness was disclosed 08/20/2012 by Charlie Miller (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3456 since 06/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in C++. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74724 (openSUSE Security Update : calligra (openSUSE-SU-2012:1061-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77482), Exploit-DB (37576), Tenable (74724), SecurityFocus (BID 54816†) and Secunia (SA50050†). The entry VDB-61714 is pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
