Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in KDE KOffice up to 2.3.3. This vulnerability affects the function read. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the read function in filters/words/msword-odf/wv2/src/styles.cpp in the Microsoft import filter in KOffice 2.3.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ODF style in an ODF document. NOTE: this is the same vulnerability as CVE-2012-3456, but it was SPLIT by the CNA even though Calligra and KOffice share the same codebase.
The weakness was shared 08/20/2012 by Charlie Miller (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3455 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in C++. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74723 (openSUSE Security Update : koffice (openSUSE-SU-2012:1060-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77483), Tenable (74723), SecurityFocus (BID 54816†), Secunia (SA50199†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35977†).
