A vulnerability was found in Novell GroupWise 8.0/8.00 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code in the library gwwww1.dll of the component GroupWise Internet Agent. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The iCalendar component in gwwww1.dll in GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) in Novell GroupWise 8.0 before Support Pack 3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and daemon crash) via a crafted date-time string in a .ics attachment.

The weakness was disclosed 09/19/2012 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research as Bug 733887 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.novell.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-3827 since 09/26/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62284 (Novell GroupWise Internet Agent 8.x < 8.0.3 / 12.x < 12.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121206 (Novell GroupWise Internet Agent Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 8.00 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12661.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (62284), SecurityFocus (BID 55574†), SecurityTracker (ID 1027540†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-36357†).
