Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Joomla! before 1.5.12 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the HTTP_REFERER header to (1) components/com_content/views/article/tmpl/form.php, (2) components/com_user/controller.php, (3) plugins/system/legacy/html.php, or (4) templates/beez/html/com_content/article/form.php.
The weakness was published 06/30/2009 by Juan Galiana Lara (Paul) as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-4909 since 12/23/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12725 (Joomla! Multiple Cross-Site Scripting and JEXEC Information Disclosure Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.5.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
