A vulnerability classified as critical was found in LibTIFF (Image Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file tif_pixarlog.c. Heap-based buffer overflow in tif_pixarlog.c in LibTIFF before 4.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted TIFF image using the PixarLog Compression format.
The weakness was published 10/28/2012 by Huzaifa Sidhpurwala as Bug 860198 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4447 since 08/21/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72635 (GLSA-201402-21 : libTIFF: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350600 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libtiff: ALAS-2012-147).
Upgrading to version 4.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
