LibTIFF up to 4.0.1 DOTRANGE memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as very critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component TIFF Handler. The manipulation of the argument DOTRANGE with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in tif_dir.c in LibTIFF before 4.0.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted DOTRANGE tag in a TIFF image.

The weakness was shared 10/18/2012 by Huzaifa Sidhpurwala with Red Hat Security Response Team as 867235 as not defined bug report (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-5581 since 10/24/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/20/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80683 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : libtiff (cve_2012_5581_denial_of)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350600 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libtiff: ALAS-2012-147).

Upgrading to version 4.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80339), Tenable (80683), SecurityFocus (BID 56715†), OSVDB (88155†) and Secunia (SA49938†). The entries VDB-6862, VDB-61582 and VDB-62785 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
