Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apache Tomcat up to 6.0.35/7.0.27 (Application Server Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component NIO Connector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
java/org/apache/coyote/http11/InternalNioInputBuffer.java in the HTTP NIO connector in Apache Tomcat 6.x before 6.0.36 and 7.x before 7.0.28 does not properly restrict the request-header size, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large amount of header data.
The weakness was shared 11/16/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at h20566.www2.hp.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2733 since 05/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79982 (GLSA-201412-29 : Apache Tomcat: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185021 (HP-UX Running Apache Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02866)).
Upgrading to version 6.0.36 or 7.0.28 eliminates this vulnerability.
