The HTTP Digest Access Authentication implementation in Apache Tomcat 5.5.x before 5.5.36, 6.x before 6.0.36, and 7.x before 7.0.30 caches information about the authenticated user within the session state, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass authentication via vectors related to the session ID.

The weakness was presented 08/27/2012 with Tomcat Security Team as 1377807 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is available at svn.apache.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-5886 since 11/17/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
