Apache Tomcat up to 5.5.0 Access Restriction access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat up to 5.5.0 (Application Server Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The replay-countermeasure functionality in the HTTP Digest Access Authentication implementation in Apache Tomcat 5.5.x before 5.5.36, 6.x before 6.0.36, and 7.x before 7.0.30 tracks cnonce (aka client nonce) values instead of nonce (aka server nonce) and nc (aka nonce-count) values, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions by sniffing the network for valid requests, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-1184.

The weakness was presented 11/17/2012 with Tomcat Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5885 since 11/17/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62884 (FreeBSD : tomcat -- authentication weaknesses (152e4c7e-2a2e-11e2-99c7-00a0d181e71d)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185021 (HP-UX Running Apache Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02866)).

Upgrading to version 5.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80408), Tenable (62884), SecurityFocus (BID 56403†), Secunia (SA51371†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-37444†). See VDB-6997, VDB-6998, VDB-7073 and VDB-7074 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
