Ruby 1.9/1.9.1/1.9.2/1.9.3/2.0 cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Ruby 1.9/1.9.1/1.9.2/1.9.3/2.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Ruby (aka CRuby) 1.9 before 1.9.3-p327 and 2.0 before r37575 computes hash values without properly restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted input to an application that maintains a hash table, as demonstrated by a universal multicollision attack against a variant of the MurmurHash2 algorithm, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-4815.

The weakness was published 11/28/2012 by Jean-Philippe Aumasson as Bug 875236 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-5371 since 10/10/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62955 (Fedora 17 : ruby-1.9.3.327-19.fc17 (2012-18017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165861 (SUSE Security Update for ruby (openSUSE-SU-2013:0376-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79993), Tenable (62955), SecurityFocus (BID 56484†), OSVDB (87280†) and Secunia (SA51253†). Similar entries are available at VDB-63666, VDB-64024 and VDB-64023. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
