Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Rubinius (the affected version is unknown). This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Rubinius computes hash values without properly restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via crafted input to an application that maintains a hash table, as demonstrated by a universal multicollision attack against the MurmurHash3 algorithm.
The weakness was released 11/28/2012 by Jean-Philippe Aumasson (Website). The advisory is shared at 131002.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-5372 since 10/10/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 56670†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-63082 and VDB-63079. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
