A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected is an unknown code of the component FreeType. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. FreeType before 2.4.9, as used in Mozilla Firefox Mobile before 10.0.4 and other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid heap read operation and memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted glyph or bitmap data in a BDF font.
The weakness was presented 09/19/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Security Team as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is available at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1127 since 02/14/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/01/2018). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative.
