Wireshark up to 1.8.4 dissect_oampdu_event_notification input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects the function dissect_oampdu_event_notification. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dissect_oampdu_event_notification function in epan/dissectors/packet-slowprotocols.c in the IEEE 802.3 Slow Protocols dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.13 and 1.8.x before 1.8.5 does not properly handle certain short lengths, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was shared 02/02/2013 by Laurent Butti as Bug 8036 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1572 since 01/30/2013. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74879 (openSUSE Security Update : wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0276-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166682 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:0322-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74879), SecurityFocus (BID 57615†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38284†). The entries VDB-63506, VDB-63505, VDB-63504 and VDB-63503 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
