A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function fragment_set_tot_len of the component DTLS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The fragment_set_tot_len function in epan/reassemble.c in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.13 and 1.8.x before 1.8.5 does not properly determine the length of a reassembled packet for the DTLS dissector, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was presented 02/02/2013 as Bug 8111 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1586 since 01/30/2013. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64649 (Debian DSA-2625-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166682 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:0322-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
