Wireshark up to 1.8.4 NTLMSSP dissector memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark and classified as critical. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component NTLMSSP dissector. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory corruption. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1590. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component NTLMSSP dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the NTLMSSP dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.13 and 1.8.x before 1.8.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was shared 01/29/2013 by Ulf Härnhammar as wnpa-sec-2013-09 as not defined bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1590 since 01/30/2013. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64649 (Debian DSA-2625-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166170 (SUSE Security Update for Wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0276-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (64649), OSVDB (89681†), Secunia (SA51968†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38302†). The entries VDB-63505, VDB-63503 and VDB-63499 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
