Samba up to 4.0.1 SWAT cross-site request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Samba up to 4.0.1 (File Transfer Software). This affects an unknown part of the component SWAT. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in the Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT) in Samba 3.x before 3.5.21, 3.6.x before 3.6.12, and 4.x before 4.0.2 allows remote attackers to hijack the authentication of arbitrary users by leveraging knowledge of a password and composing requests that perform SWAT actions.

The weakness was presented 01/30/2013 by Jan Horn as CVE-2013-0214 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at samba.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0214 since 12/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73063 (CentOS 5 : samba (CESA-2014:0305)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185124 (HPE HP-UX CIFS-Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03574)).

Upgrading to version 4.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81693), Tenable (73063), SecurityFocus (BID 57631†), OSVDB (89627†) and Secunia (SA51994†). See VDB-11176, VDB-12681, VDB-13388 and VDB-43529 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
