Samba up to 4.1.8 nmbd Service sys_recvfrom input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 4.1.8 (File Transfer Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function sys_recvfrom of the component nmbd Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The sys_recvfrom function in nmbd in Samba 3.6.x before 3.6.24, 4.0.x before 4.0.19, and 4.1.x before 4.1.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and CPU consumption) via a malformed UDP packet.

The weakness was shared 06/23/2014 by Stefan Cornelius as Denial of service - CPU loop as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at samba.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0244 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76449 (Scientific Linux Security Update : samba and samba3x on SL5.x, SL6.x i386/srpm/x86_64), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185124 (HPE HP-UX CIFS-Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03574)).

Upgrading to version 3.6.24, 4.0.19 or 4.1.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16563.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (94058), Tenable (76449), SecurityFocus (BID 68148†), Secunia (SA59378†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030455†). The entries VDB-7563, VDB-11176, VDB-12681 and VDB-13388 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
