Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Samba up to 4.1.5 (File Transfer Software). This affects an unknown code of the component SAMR Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-255. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Samba 3.x before 3.6.23, 4.0.x before 4.0.16, and 4.1.x before 4.1.6 does not enforce the password-guessing protection mechanism for all interfaces, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain access via brute-force ChangePasswordUser2 (1) SAMR or (2) RAP attempts.
The weakness was released 03/05/2014 by Andrew Bartlett as Password lockout not enforced for SAMR password changes as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at samba.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4496 since 06/12/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1552 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Samba versions 3.4.0 and above allow the administrator to implement locking out Samba accounts after a number of bad password attempts. However, all released versions of Samba did not implement this check for password changes, such as are available over multiple SAMR and RAP interfaces, allowing password guessing attacks.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73046 (Fedora 20 : samba-4.1.6-1.fc20 (2014-3796)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185124 (HPE HP-UX CIFS-Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03574)).
Upgrading to version 3.6.23, 4.0.16 or 4.1.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at samba.org. The advisory contains the following remark:
Patches for 3.4.17 and 3.5.22 have not been provided as these are now beyond our security support window.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91984), Tenable (73046), SecurityFocus (BID 66336†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43710†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-7563, VDB-11176, VDB-12645 and VDB-13388. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
